Two years ago, a new series of picture books was published in Japan by stationary and furniture maker Kokuyo. Known as the Taisetsu na Mono Series, the books were made to facilitate a dialog with young children on the important things in life. Each volume featured a theme and story created by one of five of the country’s most important copywriters and creative directors.
The binding for these books was handled by art director Kashiwa Sato and when it came time to select artwork for the volume Inochi, the organizers turned to our own Chinastu Ban. Ban was chosen especially for her ability to communicate the joy and importance of birth to children everywhere. The text for the book was written by well known ad planner, copywriter, and creative director Shinichi Fukusato.

Inochi, 2007
Produced as she carried her beloved son Isshin in her womb, the drawings came at a time when Ban was face to face with new life in all its glory. And once her baby was born, she decided to carry the project one step further and produce her own picture books, to be finished at a rate of one a month.
After a full year of production, we are now ready to introduce the first book from this project Breadman's Great Adventure!

Breadman's Great Adventure by Chinatsu Ban
If you see a shadow outside your window, it just might be… Breadman! These were the thoughts that entered my head as I watched my infant son refuse to go to sleep. This story is designed as a quick read before bedtime. When the book appears, it’s time for slumber – unless you want to get captured by the residents of the night. Go gently to sleep. And in the morning, you’ll find a warmly toasted slice of bread waiting just for you.

“Alright you, it’s getting late.”

“Time for bed, now,” came a voice from outside.

Wait, look! The window! There’s something there.

Agh!

EEK!

It’s a man in the shape of a big, big piece of bread. He began to speak.

Children who don’t go to sleep will be forced to live in a dark place with monsters and the residents of the night.

If you get pulled into their world, it’s over. Terrible things will happen.

“But don’t worry. Just follow me to the Kingdom of Dreams! GO!”

Flying through the sky with Breadman.

Everything’s so bright and beautiful.

We pass through a tunnel of rainbows.

Oh, look! A red bird is laying eggs!

Plop, plop, plop, plop. This is fun!!

With these eggs, we can make Meyaki.

Wow, what a great smell.
It’s so fresh. What is it?
It’s bread, made by Breadman!

I’m so hungry – let’s eat!!

Overcome with joy, the little boy stuffed his wide open mouth with bread.

The end.
