Neoteny Japan - Takahashi Collection in NigataCompleted Exhibitions

A collection of works representing the world wide phenomenon that is modern Japanese art!

image

From the collection of psychiatrist Ryutaro Takahashi, one of Japan’s best known contemporary art collectors, comes a selection of recent Japanese artwork. Neoteny Japan -Takahashi Collection traces the trends of contemporary Japanese art from the 1990s onward, a period that has attracted worldwide attention.

Taking as its keyword the modern term “neoteny,” or juvenilization, the exhibition focuses on the key characteristics of this movement, including its infantile qualities, childlike sensibility, otaku motifs, introversion, excess, and unique perspective toward every-day life. It also shows how the artists have borrowed forms from manga and anime, fantasy, and other subcultures, all the while making use of refined technique, attention to detail, and visual invention. You will come away with diverse insights into the unique universe of a generation of artists who have found themselves closely linked with the realities of modern Japanese society and the mental images of Japanese adolescents.

Collectively, the Takahashi collection offers an impressive cross section of the sensibilities of a specific group of artists in a specific period of time, in a way could only come from the holdings of an individual collector. The exhibition also marks the first time these many pieces will be shown together.

Among the 33 individual creators whose work is featured are internationally known names like Yoshitomo Nara, and Takashi Murakami, as well as several younger artists. Pieces number 80 in total and include paintings, sculptures, film/video, and installations.
The exhibition’s run will also feature lectures and workshops by different artists and other live events. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to re-experience the enjoyment of viewing art and the pleasure of contemplating individual works.
